About Me

MS. LUCKHARDT’S MONTESSORI KINDERGARTEN CLASS

                    Welcome to Briar Vista Elementary!

I have been in the field of education for 37 years and have devoted much of my career to educating young children.  I completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and sociology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan in 1973.  In 1978, I earned a Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  In addition, I have traveled extensively and have taught English as a Second Language in Japan, Singapore and have worked with underprivileged children in India.  I have worked in a variety of early childhood and elementary settings including Montessori and Waldorf Schools, a Hebrew Day School and the Child Development Center at the University of Michigan.

I moved to Atlanta in 1995 to attend Life Chiropractic University.  At that time I had a keen interest in pediatric chiropractic and how chiropractic intervention could help children with learning disabilities and ADHD.  During this time I worked part-time in the Afterschool Care Program at Covered Bridge Montessori School.  With the prospect of a primary teaching position and Montessori training, I was inspired to re-think my career direction.  I made the decision to return to education full-time and pursue Montessori certification.  My happiness with this decision underscores the fundamental nature of my life’s work:  helping others learn and grow.  I believe that Montessori philosophy is most conductive to creating supportive, healing and peaceful learning environments.

Recently I have worked with a team of educators, psychologists and authors to publish an empowerment program for young children.  Sweetwater Kids Empowerment Program was developed to help children discover, embrace and love who they are as they develop respect for others.  The programs focus is on ten essential themes:  belonging, making choices, self-discovery, recognizing emotions, optimism, self-confidence, kindness and compassion, cultivating respect, relationships and self-reflection.  Through the use of fun and inspiring books, engaging music, and empowering educational activities, the program helps young children gain an appreciation for their unique strengths and special qualities.
